The Delaware General Assembly has been out of session for the last month and a half. They have been conducting Joint Finance Committee meetings to create a budget for the state government. Before they adjourned in January, the Delaware House of Representatives passed HB11, a bill to prohibit fusion candidacies.

Fusion candidates have been prohibited in most states since the early 20th century, when the rise of a few alternative parties to counter the entrenching influence of the dominant Democratic and Republican Parties encouraged incumbent state legislators to prohibit political parties from agreeing on a single candidate for any one office. In doing so they made politicians accountable, and beholden, to only one party. Parties control access to general election ballots. Without ballot access, the voters don't get to decide.

Some states did not prohibit fusion candidacies though. New York and Delaware are among them. It was fusion candidate Fiorello La Guardia who won the 1934 election for mayor of New York City, permanently weakening the entrenched Tammany Hall machine. Today in New York, most legislative candidates claim the nominations of at least two political parties.

This is obviously an issue of great importance to alternative parties. All of the alternative parties active in Delaware, the Constitution Party, Independent Party, Working Families Party, and the Libertarian Party oppose this legislation. We are different parties, with different priorities, and even different beliefs on many issues, but we have been working since this bill was introduced to coordinate a strategy on protecting our freedom to choose our nominee through legislative, judicial, and political means.

Our greatest hope is that Delaware's senators will protect themselves from the excesses of their party leadership, protect our freedom to choose our own nominee, and protect your freedom to know it when political parties with important differences can come together and agree on the best candidate for the job. Our greatest hope is that Delaware's senators will vote "NO" on HB11. Please call yours and let them know what you think.
